Ryan is part of a panel briefing on water resources. He explains how field-based academic research can underpin large-scale hydrological modeling and forecasting efforts. The briefing, sponsored by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), took place during violent clashes between water protectors at Standing Rock and private security guards working for Dakota Access Pipeline developers. Ryan spends part of his presentation emphasizing the importance of respecting Indigenous peoples’ connections to water.
